Congrats you have decided to go vegan or vegetarian(Plant Based Diet).  Maybe it was a back and forth decision for you or an easy cold tofurky choice, but whatever the reason you have decided to change your diet and you should feel great. The first step is making a choice and usually it is the hardest step. So give yourself a pat on the back.

 

Cold Tofurky vs Byte Sized Steps

So there are two questions you need to ask before you start this transition. Do I go cold tofurky? Or take the transition in steps. You should assess your personality and decide which one would work best for you. For lack of a better example, some individuals can quit smoking cigarettes the next day and others need a nicotine patch to help wean themselves off. To be most successful, decide which one works best for you with meat.  In order to be successful, you’ll need to decided which plan will work best for you.

 

Full Steam Ahead

For those that are going Cold Tofurky it is now important to immerse yourself in the appropriate culture. Visiting our website or one similar is a great first step. You want to be exposed to various types of foods. It is really important that when you switch you continue to eat a balanced meal. People that have been Vegan or Vegetarian for a majority of their life, have a wealth of knowledge on what products are tasty. Family members or friends that you know have been vegan or vegetarian for a while, are great resources also. Remember don’t beat yourself up if you revert for a day or so.

If you decided to take Byte Sized Steps you need to map out a realistic timetable for when you would like to fully be converted. 6 months is a good time if you don’t have one in mind. Start with eating Vegan or vegetarian 2 days out of the week for a month. The next month up it to 3 and so on and so on until month 6. At this point you will be eating a plant based diet 7 days a week. You have more time to plan so you can really find recipes you like.

Remember if you are not feeling well while transitioning you need to reassess the diet, your decision, and why you made this choice. It is really important to eat a balanced diet. Just eliminating meat and eating the same way, may not have the effect you are looking for. Be careful of loading up on carbs, sodium and added sugar to replace meat. Fries and Pasta can have a negative effect on your body and health if consumed in large quantities. Changing your lifestyle is a journey and should not make you feel guilty or terrible. The goal is to empower your mind, body, and spirit with this change.

  • Holidays will be tough, but look for a community

  • Finding healthy, delicious, good quality, and affordable food may be an issue
  • Research your area for farmers markets and health food stores
  • You don’t need to spend a lot to eat healthy
